How to Get Your Book Rejected, Part One

Please know that when I pass on a manuscript, the decision is not borne of a desire to be sadistic or hurtful to authors. You won't find me in a dungeon lit by a single bulb, cackling with glee as manuscript after manuscript is stabbed repeatedly with a rubber stamped marked PASS. Our staff is comprised of authors, and we know the hard work, the dedication, and the emotion involved when writing a story. In our collective histories, we too have received rejection notices, and we know how disappointing it is. We wanted to scream, cuss, and eat everything in sight to dull the pain.

How to Get Your Book Rejected, Part Three

In a large publishing house like Bantam or Kensington, literally thousands of manuscripts are sent annually by aspiring and established authors seeking publication. For the small press pub or eBook publisher, there could be hundreds of queries and submissions sent each year or, depending upon popularity, each month. Having to wade through all this prose, whether in hard copy or onscreen, can put great strain on the eyes. When you think of how quickly these editors need to fill publication schedules, that is a lot of work to read non-stop.

How Publishers Choose Manuscripts

A decade ago readers idolized authors and printing books equated to celebrity status. Publishers awarded authors huge bonuses and paid celebrities astronomical figures just to print their stories. Acquisitions editors sought the author, enticing him just for the privilege of financial gain. Audiences applauded as they eagerly awaited printing. Now, with the ease of personal computer word processing more people are writing while fewer read for pleasure. Larger book publishers are loosing money to the smaller companies popping up monthly. The publishing companies are changing the way they do business.

Writers of Books Should be Allowed to Write Book Reviews of their Literary Work

Most believe that it is problematic for an author to write book reviews about a book that they indeed wrote. There are many reasons for this, such as self promotion, conflict of interest and hype or buzz-ful insincerity. Sure all that makes sense for the reasons why we have created this social norm and expect authors to abide by it. Yet, in fact it is absurd that everyone else in the world can write book reviews expect the author who knows the most about the work.

How Fiction Authors Can Get Publicity

Traditionally, fiction authors have found it very difficult to get publicity outside of media that reviews books. That's because they've been focusing on their book, rather than the topic. To reap the benefits of publicity, novelists need to see themselves and their topic in a new way. Here's how.

Where Do Potential Buyers and Readers of Books Get Information

Generally when someone buys a book they do so on the advice of a friend most often, but that is not the only place the book buying public gets their information. We all know there is quite a bit of book marketing going on these days and lots of reviews, both professional and questionable. For instance the New Yorker or NYTs and the simplistic book reviews online at an Amazon or book website.

Under the Radar Tactics for PR Challenged Authors

Some authors find it difficult to call the media to promote their books. Many of us are either introverted, working full-time or, quite frankly, we don't like to feel like we're either bothering someone or asking for something. I like to think of it as human nature getting in the way of our book promotion goals.
