What Can I Write About?

Many authors simply do not know what to write about. This is a common theme in even experienced writers and can lead to stagnation and delay. It is easily dealt with, provided you take the correct approach. In reality, there are millions upon millions of different subjects that you can write upon, and there is no need to believe that you have no skills in interpreting the world around you. You just have to use them.

Trust The Creative Writing Process

Creativity is a mysterious process. When I first began to write, the miracle of starting with nothing and ending up with pages of coherent copy were a mystery to me. I knew only that, when I sat down at my little electric portable, something magical happened; but I didn't know where the magic came from. Eventually, however, I was able to break it down into five critical steps.

188 Stage Hero's Journey - Monomyth - Usefulness Of The Loop

Often the loop is closed once the Hero has completed his (or her) Journey and returns to his or her Ordinary World. In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Frodo et al return to the idyllic (and now safe) Shire. In The Great Escape (1963), Hilts and some of the other prisoners return to the camp.

188 Stage Hero's Journey Monomyth - First Catharsis

The Hero has no need to kill the Antagonist (Gods need not kill) and lets him live or hesitates. The Antagonist is after all, a shadow of the Hero's Own Self. In Return of the Jedi (1983), Luke critically wounds Vader, he does not kill him.

188 Stage Hero's Journey - Monomyth - Characters And Archetypes

Apart from the Hero, it is these archetypes' challenges that provide the basis for subplot.
