When You Are Comparing Things, Then You Use Than

Mastering the English language is a challenge. Don't worry about mastering the language, just make sure you’re using the right words when you're writing and you'll be fine.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): The Function Of Injured Animals; Symbolism Again

It is not unusual for the Hero to be led into a new stage of the Journey by an animal, a wounded animal or similar. In Straw Dogs (1971), Amy follows the cat.

Three Concerns for Writers When Writing Fiction

An author should be unique in writing style, and should possess a voice that attracts readers and inspires them to want to seek out books that mimic yours, rather than leave them guessing for whom you take after. That said, there are a number of tics that readers (and editors) may find more annoying than amusing. In the spirit of previous articles on the subject of style, I hereby submit three more personal nitpicks of mine: devices and phrases I have seen in bestsellers and small press offerings. The following are not necessarily incorrect or improper, but may cause distraction if overused in a manuscript. Grab a pen and proceed with caution.

I Never Said That!

I never said everyone could write. What I did say was- Well, read on to find out.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Magic Flight

The magic flight, supernatural in nature [In Straw Dogs (1971), Henry runs in the fog], is often, but not necessarily centred around escape. In Straw Dogs (1971), Henry runs from Tom et al.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Resistance to the Return

A common characteristic of the Crossing of the Return Threshold is the resistance to it. In Straw Dogs (1971), Amy doesn't want Henry in the house.

Email Interviews Have Their Place: 6 Times For Writers To Use Email

When should a journalist use email for interviewing? Many veteran journalists warn new freelancers and staff writers not to use email to interview sources. Email interviews can be stilted, awkward, confusing (if the subject isn't comfortable with writing), or even too polished. It's also harder to have a natural conversation through email, which can restrict the direction of an interview.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Antihero: Passing the New World Guardians

Before the Antihero passes into the New World (wherein lies the elixir), he (or she) will very often have to commit a dark act. It is the supernatural aid that presents this gift (magical gift). The antihero is happy to oblige; this is what he does; it is his nature and differentiating capability.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Antihero and Shape Shifter

Whereas the hero encounters a shape shifter that often turns from good to bad, the antihero encounters the opposite. It is not unusual for the antihero to encounter a shape shifter that has authority over him and who is, as is normal, a close associate of the main antagonist (demon king). As is normal, these two characters immediately conflict. In Scarface (1983), Tony meets Omar.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Resisting Engagement

Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the Master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final Conflict (a metaphor for this stage) follows a distinct process. An element is resisting the Engagement. In Straw Dogs (1971), David tells Cawsey and Charlie to get out of the house and locks the door.
